Where do I begin to explain that they just aren't happening this year? First, I try to get a decent picture of the kids every year and I just never got around to it this fall. And, to be frank, the kids never cooperate and let it be an easy task, so "never getting around to it" can probably be equated to "avoided it". Then, I decided to just send out cards... with no picture. I actually purchased them at WalMart when I was there about two weeks ago. Cute little cards, recycled even - my sister would be proud of me. But, then I needed stamps. Proud of myself in that regard too. Went to the post office last week and stood in line like a good little soldier to purchase them. But....now it's the Monday of the week of Christmas, and unless I get out my address book TODAY and write out all the cards and address them and get them in the mailbox before the mailman comes, my chances of friends and family receiving them on time for Christmas are diminishing rapidly. So, my dilemma is now this... do I waste the cards and stamps (well, I guess those would get used eventually - like 3 years since we pay everything online now!) and just forgo this tradition and let everyone think they pissed me off and got crossed off our list this year, or do I stress about it and get it done? Another Darden Dilemma....

Christmas Cards

Start addressing right after Christmas for next year, then put them in a safe place all ready to mail December 2010. Come December 2010 stress will begin all over again...looking for the "darn" cards that are all ready to go! Hang in there...it doesn't get any better.
ReplyDeleteI think you should send them now even if they are a day or two late. People are busy and traveling and I think most understand! I don't think anyone would scoff at them arriving late. You never know when it could have been the postal system's fault. I think it is the thought and effort put into it rather than the timeliness that matters. I came close to not sending any this year either, but I knew I would feel guilty and regret it. I hate the whole picture taking process and addressing, stamping, etc. too! I try to atleast get the picture taken by Thanksgiving. The photo cards are the way to go. We did those for the first time this year. I think they may be less personal, but so much easier. You don't have to sign or write a personal comment on each one. I get the boys to help. As I address the envelopes, one stuffs and seals then the other stamps. Our annual xmas photo has been a tradition and it is neat to look back at them. I like getting the boys involved as well - that way I'm not doing it all by myself. It is quality family time. LOL! Some people don't send them at all. I like how some donate the money or whatever, but others just don't care, or are lazy, or think it's a waste of time. I know Bryan's relatives that live out of state and old family friends that we don't see often really look forward to them and appreciate them, as do we enjoy receiving them. Whatever you decide, people will understand and not judge you. They'll just look forward to next year's even more!
